ITV Central Shines a Light on Summer Care at Warrens Hall
In August, we were delighted to welcome ITV Central News to our home after they chose us as one of the care homes to profile during the extra-hot spell of summer weather. Their visit came at a time when the heatwave was making headlines across the country, and the media was keen to show how vulnerable groups, particularly older people, were being kept safe and well looked after. For us, it was an opportunity to demonstrate not only the practical measures we put in place during hot weather but also the warm, community-focused atmosphere that makes Warrens Hall so special.
The reporter and cameraman arrived on a bright morning, fully briefed in advance about the steps we take to ensure residents stay cool, comfortable, and hydrated when temperatures rise. As anyone who works in social care will know, looking after residents during a heatwave requires planning and attention to detail.
From adjusting meal times and offering lighter food options, to ensuring that shaded areas and cool rooms are available, it’s a team effort. Most importantly, our staff spend extra time making sure that residents are regularly offered drinks, fruit, and frozen treats to keep their fluid levels up.
During their visit, the ITV crew spent several hours with us, moving around the home to capture life on what was one of the hottest days of the summer. They filmed members of our team handing out chilled drinks and ice lollies, and they spoke to both staff and residents about how we adapt our routines during extreme weather. The footage showed not only the practical steps in place but also the small, thoughtful touches – such as offering a resident their favourite flavour of ice lolly or setting up a cool indoor space where friends and families could sit and chat.
Our manager, Lavinia Tudora, gave an interview where she explained the importance of monitoring hydration levels and keeping residents safe from the risks of heatstroke. She highlighted the training our staff receive and how everyone works together to ensure no resident is overlooked. Several team members also spoke on camera, sharing their pride in the care they provide and their commitment to making sure residents are both safe and happy, even in challenging weather conditions.
What made the day extra special was the involvement of our residents and their families. Some of our residents were keen to share their experiences, speaking about how much they appreciated the thought and effort that went into keeping them comfortable. Family members also gave interviews, talking about the peace of mind they feel knowing their loved ones are in safe hands, particularly at times of year when the weather poses additional risks. Their words brought home the value of strong relationships between staff, residents, and relatives – something we take enormous pride in fostering every day.
Lavinia said: "The visit was not only enjoyable but also incredibly rewarding. To be recognised by a national TV channel as a home that genuinely puts its residents first is an honour for our whole team. It was a day filled with smiles, laughter, and a real sense of achievement. More importantly, it shone a light on the incredible dedication of our staff and the supportive, caring community we have built here."
